Submarining: The New Dating "Trend" of Ghosting and Reappearing

By now, you've probably heard about (or been involved in) ghosting. When someone ghosts, they simply exit a romantic prospect's life with no warning or explanation. A ghoster stops responding to text messages and answering phone calls; they fail to show up to previously planned dates. While the term may be relatively new, the vanishing-without-a-trace behavior it describes isn't.

But since the term was coined, plenty of other new dating terms have arisen. There's phubbing, when someone ignores you to pay attention to their phone; mooning, or using the “do not disturb” mode to ignore texts from a specific sender; and even Trumping, when someone falsely claims to support Trump to get people to leave them alone. Now, there's "submarining," and honestly...we're tired.

According to Marie Claire, submarining is what someone does when they date someone for a bit, disappear without explanation, and then reappear, also without explanation. If the person you've been seeing ghosts on you and then three months later casually texts you asking if you want to go see a movie, that's submarining. It's basically as if they've been underwater and out of sight for weeks or months only to reemerge in your life, leaving you bewildered. If you're being submarined, you may want to ask the culprit where the hell they went or you may prefer to play it cool. Either way, feel no pressure to give them another chance. There's someone else out there who will be much more communicative about their, um, underwater adventures.
