This Anastasia Beverly Hills Moonchild Glow Kit Alternative Is a Quarter of the Price

My brain might be an encyclopedia of highlighters, but you don't have to be an expert to notice the upcoming Holographic Haul edition of the Lottie London Shimmer Squad looks strikingly similar to a popular palette. I got to test of the British beauty brand's new highlighter palette before it drops later this month, and the first thing I thought when I opened it up was "hello, Moonchild." Yup, we have an Anastasia Beverly Hills Moonchild Glow Kit alternative on our hands, people.

Dupe isn't the right word in this situation as they are far from identical. I consider Moonchild to be the Holographic Haul's older sister. Like two my younger sisters and I, we look vaguely alike but definitely have our differences. We undeniably share the same DNA, though. The DNA that ties these palettes together is color-shifting, cool-toned highlighters. (And of course, both are amazing, just like all my sisters and me.)

Shade Selection

The four shades that make up the Lottie London Shimmer Squad match up to four of the six in the Moonchild Palette almost to the T. First of all, both palettes have a minty green hue. In the Lottie London palette, it's called The Gossip, and in Moonchild, it's called Lucky Clover. A true silver can also be found in both. The Rebel is in the top left corner of Holographic Haul, and it matches up to ABH's Star. For the petal pink shade in each palette, refer to Lottie London's The BFF and Moonchild's Pink Heart. And last but not least, both palettes tout a silvery blue shade. They are the least similar compared to the others mentioned. The Thrill Seeker in the Holographic Haul palette is more of a silver with a blue shift, and Moonchild's Blue Ice is more blue with a silver shift.

Of course, there's also the fact that Moonchild has two additional shades that Lottie London's quad is missing: Purple Horseshoe (a violet with a sky blue shift) and Blue Ice (a pearly blue). If you're looking for an alternative for Purple Horseshoe, though, I suggest trying out Milk Makeup's Holographic Powder in Supernova. It's a single shade compact, so you don't need to deal with the bulk of the other shades.

Formula and Glow Factor

The texture of both powders are basically the same: soft and almost creamy. As for color payoff, ABH is known for its intensely pigmented powdered highlighters in its Glow Kits. That being said, it's pretty hard for Lottie London to match up.

When swatching shades from both palettes on my hand, I noticed that I got the perfect amount of pigment of the ABH highlighters with one swipe. The Lottie London one needed a second one. However, that's not a huge deal because not everyone desires a blinding glow. You can easily build up the Lottie London one to that intensity, though. Just know that you'll be going back for seconds.

Another aspect the formulas is the composition of the shimmer. Moonchild is specked with obvious glitter, which could be a deterrent for some. The Shimmer Squad doesn't have that. Instead, the shimmer is super finely milled, so you can easily blend them into your skin without drawing attention to your pores or having harsh edges.

Packaging

Lottie London's palette actually has a little mirror in it. This makes it a bit more travel friendly and convenient to use than the ABH Glow Kit. The latter never seems to have a mirror no matter how many editions of it that Anastasia Beverly Hills comes out with.

As far as pan size goes, Lottie London's look bigger. I did the math, though, and found that both palettes have pans hold about 0.15 ounces of product each.

Price and Availability

Of course, price is a selling point for Lottie London's Shimmer Squad. It will be just $10.99 on ulta.com. Moonchild, on the other hand, is $40 on ulta.com, sephora.com, and anastasiabeverlyhills.com. So you can shop it more places and rack up some VIB points at Sephora.
