I started wearing winged liner when I was 15 years old — all because of a happy accident. I'd stolen my mother's new liquid liner for a concert, and I remember thinking, "I've only got one shot — I can't mess this up," because I could only use so much before my mom would start noticing how much liner I was actually siphoning from her makeup bag. I started sweeping the superthin pen slowly across my lids, when whoops — I went a little bit too far. I looked over to my friend who was helping me get ready and said, "This could be a look." And from that moment on, it was. Now, I can't leave my apartment without it.
Over the years, I've refined my technique — and amped up my look (I now prefer big, dramatic wings) — but I envy first-timers today. They have all the tools (and Snapchat filters) in the palm of their hands for creating perfect flicks and flairs. It's not the simplest look to master — folks, I hear you — but here are nine tools that help make winged liner a breeze.
-
M.A.C. Rollerwheel Liquid Liner:: We can thank Instagram for making squiggly makeup a look, but if you're not here for it, this liner's for you. Instead of the typical brush tip, this liner has a thin, tiny wheel at the end of its applicator that creates perfectly straight lines in one, smooth motion for razor-sharp wings. ($21, Shop Now)
-
Beautyblender Liner Designer Pro: This guitar pick look-a-like takes the place of the tape or credit card you may be using to create a straight line. Rubbing the triangle in between your fingers heats up the adhesive on the back, so you can stick on the corner of your eye for perfectly straight, angled flicks. ($16, Shop Now)
-
Revlon ColorStay Exactify Pizza Cutter Liquid Liner: Mermaid liner, unicorn wings — whatever you want to call it, these sparkling and metallic formulas make drawing triangles a cinch. Its applicator looks exactly how it sounds — like a pizza cutter — with a wheel at its end to slick across lids for thin, straight lines. ($11.99, Shop Now)
-
Vamp Stamp: This tiny wand takes away any (and every) difficulty associated with winged liner. At each end are identical stamps (labeled left and right) that ensure even triangles. Just dip each end into the pot of ink and press at the ends of your eyes. It's that easy. ($25, Shop Now)

Benefit Cosmetics They're Real! Push-Up Liner: This gel-based eye pen slicks across your skin without any tug, so drawing on your lines is a smooth process. The pen's flat, angled tip makes it easy to create a flare at the end of your line. Bonus: The formula is waterproof and once it sets — so it won't budge — making your wings last all day. ($24, Shop Now)
-
E.L.F. Makeup Remover Pen: For when you can't get your wings even, this pen's point is thicker in size, so you can sweep off your wings and start over without removing the rest of your eye makeup. ($3, Shop Now)
-
Violent Eyes Temporary Eye Appliqués These eye stickers, which come in shimmery shades and designs, give you dramatic wings in literal seconds — just peel and place. ($10, Shop Now)
-
Lancôme Grandiose Bendable Liquid Eyeliner So maybe you need to approach your liner from a different angle. Lancôme's liner has an applicator that literally bends (just like the bent-liner makeup brush), which, for some, can make a world of difference. ($32, Shop Now)
-
Lashfood Makeup Eraser: Small mistakes are bound to happen, which is why this fine-point pen gently removes makeup (even won't-budge waterproof formulas) in the tiniest of crevices without any tug. ($18, Shop Now)
