Kelly Clarkson: "When I Was Really Skinny, I Wanted to Kill Myself"

These days, Kelly Clarkson DGAF about what Twitter trolls — or anyone else — has to say about her weight (which, by the way, is exactly how it should be). But in a new interview with Attitude, the "Meaning of Life" singer shared that when her career first took off post-American Idol, she felt pressure from executives to be "really skinny."

"When I was really skinny, I wanted to kill myself," she told Attitude. "I was miserable, like inside and out, for four years of my life. But no one cared because aesthetically you make sense.”

In the wake of her AI win, Clarkson released two studio albums between 2004 and 2007 which included some of her biggest hits, like "A Moment Like This," "Breakaway," and "Since U Been Gone," but she wasn't able to fully enjoy her success because of the pressure she endured to be a certain weight. “It was a very dark time for me. I thought the only way out was quitting," she says. "I like wrecked my knees and my feet because all I would do is put in headphones and run. I was at the gym all the time."

Then, in 2007, she released "My December," and after battling for (and winning!) creative control over her music, she decided the forces around her needed a change. "There’s a song on My December called 'Sober,'" she explained. "There’s this line ‘picked the weeds but kept the flowers’ and I just live my life by that because you are who you surround yourself with. I was around some really negative people, and I got out of it because I had a lot of great people there too. It was a case of turning around, facing them and walking toward the light."

Now, eight years and nine albums later, Kelly Clarkson seems to be in a much healthier and happier place. On Fourth of July, a Twitter troll tried to body shame her by commenting "you're fat" in reply to a photo she posted, to which she responded: "And fucking awesome."
