Watch 100 Years of Beauty Icons in Just 3 Minutes

Before the age of beauty bloggers and Instagram stars, there were beauty icons: Famous women (usually celebrities) who defied old beauty standards and set their own timeless trends.

The early 20th century, for instance, saw women worldwide emulating the glamor of Old Hollywood actresses Katharine Hepburn and Ava Gardner, much like recent years have been dominated by Kardashian lookalikes with perfectly tamed brows and plumped lips. Over the course of American history, some of these famous style stars have made more of a mark than others — and it is those famous faces we celebrate as style trailblazers and historical beauty icons.

In our latest "100 Years" video series, we take a look back at some of the past century's most celebrated beauty icons, from Josephine Baker to Ashley Graham. Though some of these icons are better-known than others, one thing they all share is their unique sense of style and self (and the way that sense of style helped to shape the biggest beauty trends throughout history).

Baker's sleek, daring flapper style (complete with finger waves and dark, dramatic lipstick) was as influential to the 1920s as Madonna's spunky sensibility was to the 1980s. After all, trends may come and go — but icons are forever.

So, without further ado, check out our 100 Years of Beauty Icons video, below, for a look at the biggest beauty trends of the past century — and (most importantly) the wonderful women who helped to shape them.
