Cat Acne Is Real, and the Pictures Are Sad Yet Hilarious

Everyone has struggled with an untimely pimple or acne breakout, and apparently, cats are no different.

Literally, feline acne is when your cat gets a pimple, as Refinery29 recently pointed out, and according to Andrew Rosenberg, DVM, DACVD, at Riverdale Veterinary Dermatology, who spoke with the site, blackheads and pustular whiteheads can appear on cats' chin and lips. This explains a lot about the general demeanor of cats.

According to PetMD (pets even have an equivalent of WebMD), some cats may only have a single outbreak, while others can suffer from a life-long acne affliction. The cause doesn't seem to be quite as clear, but can include poor grooming habits, poor exfoliation, stress, viruses, and using plastic bowls.

So, besides switching from plastic to stainless steel, what does one do to cure a cat's zits? The same thing humans do, supposedly. Medicated wipes, an antiseptic cleanser, or, eventually, a special shampoo or topical antibiotic can all be solutions, according to PetMD. And, as everyone knows (and sometimes obeys), the main rule of pimpledom is no picking or popping. As of yet there is no equivalent to an animal Dr. Pimple Popper, but now that awareness has been raised for feline acne, perhaps a hero will come forward to fill this cat-shaped void.

A simple search of the hashtag #catacne on Instagram returns more than 200 posts of distraught cats with a big ol' pimple on their chins. Some indulge in a little self-care with a clay mask, while others opt for some help from a toner. Despite the fact that cats with pimples seem like a really funny thing, it's important to note that if your cat does show signs of swelling, you should take him or her to the veterinarian so they can rule out other more serious conditions like mange, fungal infection, feline leprosy, allergies, or tumors.
