The internet is upset with popular beauty vlogger Jaclyn Hill, who they're accusing of cultural appropriation for wearing an Afro wig as a part of her halloween costume, which from the looks of the photos she posted, appeared to be a cross between a clown and a skeleton.
After posting several pictures of her controversial costume on Instagram, people were quick to call Hill out for wearing a hairstyle that knowingly stems from black culture. They took to the comments, as well as Twitter, to express their concerns, claiming that someone with her visibility should have been more mindful and sensitive to people of color. Some also said she should have known she would receive backlash, especially considering her massive fanbase on YouTube and social media.
However, it seems opinions are divided, as some people are coming forward and defending Hill, claiming that the Afro is not in fact cultural appropriation, but rather just an aspect of the "clown" costume. Hill has yet to make an official statement, though did address another situation that her followers dragged her for: a friend of hers who dressed as Pocahontas for her and her husband's Halloween party.
Hill took to Twitter to explain that the friend is actually Native American and apologized for those who thought otherwise and were offended by the costume. "So for that, I am sorry on my part. I appreciate those of you who kindly educate me & send me articles on things I'm unaware of," she tweeted, referencing the fact that many of her followers shared with her the harrowing true story behind Pocahontas.
It remains to be seen whether Hill will address the controversy surrounding her Halloween wig, though Allure reached out for comment and will update this post accordingly when and if we get a response.
