This Viral DIY Concealer "Hack" Features Crayons

You can DIY just about everything in your beauty routine if you set your mind to it. Instagram is filled with creative ways to make your own face masks, hair growth serums, lip plumpers — and now, apparently concealer. Beauty vlogger Rady Kovacova, better known as @grwrady on the Internet, recently posted a video of herself whipping up some DIY concealer. I'm simultaneously impressed and completely confused. When I run out of concealer, my first thought definitely isn't to make some. However, I'm comforted in the fact that, if need be, I could just follow Kovacova's recipe.

Kovacova starts off by emptying the last bit of setting powder left around the pan of her Nyx HD Finishing Powder into a small bowl. Then, she adds spoonfuls of two different moisturizers: the Benefit Total Moisture Facial Cream and the Glamglow Volcasmic Matte Glow Moisturizer. Kovacova noted that the latter helps give the DIY concealer a thicker consistency. Then, things start getting weird. After she mixed together the powder and moisturizer — two very normal ingredients — Kovacova throws in some chunks of peach, white, and yellow crayons. In the past, I've encountered video of people making lipstick out of the art supply, but crayon-based concealer is a new one.

To melt down the crayons, Kovacova later held the bowl over a lit candle and mixed everything together until it was a uniform liquid. From there, she poured the melted concealer concoction into the empty Nyx setting powder compact. Then, she popped it in the fridge for an hour. Once it's set, Kovacova said when applied with a Beautyblender, it doesn't crease, and it's hydrating. "I was honestly shook by how good this homemade concealer turned out to be!" she wrote. I, too, am shook. The process may be fun if you have some free time to spare, but there are other concealer hacks out there. You don't have to melt crayons and smear them all over your face to cover up redness and dark circles when you're in a pinch. I'm a liquid foundation person. Honestly, when I run out of concealer, I just gather the thickened foundation around the rim of the bottle onto a Beautyblender and tap it onto my problem spots. You can also leave a bit of foundation on the back of your hand to let it dry out and thicken up a bit while you apply the rest of your makeup. Adding a bit of loose setting powder to it will help it thicken up even faster.

If you prefer powder foundation, try dabbing it onto your usual concealer spots with a Beautyblender that is a bit more damp than usual. It will pick up more pigment that way and deposit on your face with a thicker consistency. You can also take cues from Kovacova and mix some of it with your favorite moisturizer.

Tons of affordable but efficient concealer options exist, too, if you have time to run to the drugstore. Nyx's Hi Definition Photo Concealer Wand is a Pinterest favorite. The $8 CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Soft Touch Concealer recently won a Best of Beauty award. ColourPop's $6 No Filter Concealer is an Allure go-to, too. People also swear by the non-creasing powers of Catrice's $4 Liquid Camouflage Concealer.

But if you're feeling crafty, go ahead and try out Kovacova's DIY concealer recipe. Maybe you'll end up passing it down generations like your grandma's apple pie recipe.
