There are few things quite as harmful to the skin as pollution. Like sun exposure (the No. 1 danger to healthy skin), pollution can cause an array of issues, from premature aging to acne. Unfortunately, unlike sun protection — which we all know is crucial when spending time outside — few take steps to protect themselves against the harmful effects of air pollution, despite the fact that we're exposed to it on a near-constant basis. Cosmetics brand Urban Decay is looking to change that with a new anti-pollution setting spray.
The All-Nighter Pollution Protection Makeup Setting Spray, which hits shelves later this month, is a makeup setting spray specially designed to guard the skin against the damaging effects of pollution. Like Urban Decay's OG All-Nighter Makeup Setting Spray, the new formula utilizes a special temperature-control technology to prevent makeup from melting, or otherwise sliding off, your face. The pollution-protecting spray's formula is similar to the original, as well, but with the addition of protective antioxidants and minerals (including zinc and magnesium) that work like a "shield" to guard against free radicals and chemical-laden air pollution.
Though Urban Decay isn't the first brand to launch a product designed to combat the effects of pollution (French brand Decléor Paris and NoxiDoxi both beat 'em to it), it may be the smartest one yet, because setting sprays, by default, are the last product you put on your skin. Having a moisturizer designed to guard against pollution is all well and good, but moisturizer doesn't sit atop your skin in the way that setting spray does; having that final "layer" in your daily beauty routine function as an invisible shield is a pretty genius way to protect against harmful pollutants. Admittedly, we haven't tried the anti-pollution setting spray yet, but we're definitely excited to see if it holds up to the hype.
That said, fans of the original All-Nighter Makeup Setting Spray who don't want to switch to a new formula needn't worry: Urban Decay's anti-pollution spray is a separate product from the original; not a change to the formula. If you live in a super-rural area or are allergic to any of the minerals infused in the anti-pollution formula, the original All-Nighter spray is probably still a better pick. For those of us who live in cities, though — where you can practically feel the pollution sinking into your pores — Urban Decay's newest setting spray may just be a game changer.
The All-Nighter Pollution Protection Makeup Setting Spray will hit Sephora, Ulta, and urbandecay.com on December 26, and it'll retail for $36. Until then, stay tuned for more details (and keep that skin protected).
