Our latest discovery falling down the Instagram rabbit hole is something you might want to brace yourself for. Ben Ko, hairstylist at Bespoke Salon in Scottsdale, Arizona, recently posted a video of his new creation: the super-short Yoyogi haircut.
Inspiration stemmed from the Japanese rockabilly scene, namely in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo. The cut on Ko’s client features geometric lines and triangle-shaped sideburns, which stand out as half of the head is shaved.
It’s hard not to cringe while watching the close-up snipping action since it hits so close to the skin, but you can’t deny that the look is totally unique. Plus, it takes talent to get a cut so precise. The video has garnered more than 3,400 views and compared to other punk rock-style haircuts, which have received polarizing comments, the majority of people seem to be loving this (although a few are left confused). One user, @ashleypaigecollective wrote, “How does it feel to be so badass?” and @ruben_pe_pa noted, “Sick 👌🏼”.
“I wanted to create an aggressive shape balanced by a soft color with a feminine feel,” Ko tells Allure. The end result was a light pink hue, done by Jay Wesley Olson, based on a full-head bleach and tone. Then, the color was "lifted to white, using a single tone (mostly Pulp Riot Clear with a touch of Blush and Lava), applied to the roots, and feathered to the ends of the longer panels to achieve a sheer, graduated feel."
In the 27-second video, Ko says, “I’ve never filmed myself doing this. In my left hand, I have my phone and in my right hand, I'm refining this line.” It’s all about the multi-tasking. See above for the video and get ready to click replay — it's hard not to turn away.
