Blake Lively may not crack jokes as often as her husband Ryan Reynolds, but she's still got a sense of humor — even if people on social media don't always get it.
For instance, on New Year's Eve, she posted a self-proclaimed "no-makeup selfie" to Instagram in which she's obviously wearing a bunch of makeup to be funny. Not only was the picture in question not an actual selfie, it was literally a glamour shot from the Gossip Girl days and a whole decade old. Lively is blatantly wearing a full face of makeup in the picture, smoky eye and all, so why are people so upset about it?
The answer: because she posted it to social media, and the internet is always in the mood to get riled up. People actually called her out in the comments of the post for wearing makeup in the photo (yeah, she knows she's wearing makeup, that's the joke). Some went so far as to call her a bad role model for using the #makeupfree hashtag on a picture in which she's wearing makeup because kids might be scrolling through the hashtag, see her picture, and think that they, too, should look like that without cosmetic assistance. Just to be clear, we think that's a bizarrely over-the-top stance to take.
Here's a sampling of the responses she received:
Reality check: It is safe to assume that Lively is very aware that she's wearing makeup in the photo. Blake has a goofy side and we need to let her have that, OK? Oh, and if you think all those perfectly-posed, artfully lit, filtered, curated makeup-free selfies are any less curated than other Instagram content, think again.
As one fan (who got the joke) wrote in the comments, "Nothing but respect for MY #makeupfree president." All hail.
