With the rise of unconventional hair colors, virtually every rule has gone out the salon window — and that includes combining colors that you might otherwise think would clash. A rich sapphire blue sharing the same head as yellows, pinks, and oranges? It sounds a little crazy, even for diehard fans of vivids, but in the hands of a colorist like Derek Cash, it's crazy-beautiful.
When Cash's client arrived at South Florida's Genesis Hair Boutique, she already had blue hair, but they decided to go for something even bolder — a decision inspired by the lack of color in the salon's decor. "The color scheme I chose for my salon is all tones of gray, therefore when Salon Centric sent me SoColor Cult colors, these were the colors that really stood out to me," Cash tells Allure. "I decided to just go into this project using the melting method."
In the caption of the stunning results photo posted to Instagram, Cash writes, "Thank you @saloncentric and @matrix for allowing me to try /#socult colors . I custom colored @glamseamless “20 inches. Thank you @beautyluxe.dora for styling this beautiful creation." Did you catch that? To make this amazing contrast possible, Cash colored extensions by Glam Seamless.
"We colored the extensions on a coloring table we have at my salon, and we used SoColor Cult by Matrix in the colors Red Hot, Orange Alert, Lucky Duck Yellow, and Clear for the melt," Cash tells Allure about how he achieved the fiery blend. But the real trick to making this unexpected combination come together so harmoniously? "We added blue to the root of the extensions for a seamless blend." The result is color that looks almost as if it's magically transitioning from a photo negative to a full-color picture.
