Frontal Queen Porscha Weeks' Bald Head Photos Start Debate About Black Hair

Porscha Weeks, aka the Frontal Queen, the popular Philadelphia-based stylist known for her impeccable ability to slay every frontal she touches has gone viral once again. But while people have come to know her for the work she’s done on her clients, this time, the attention is on her. In a recent post on Instagram, she shared two striking side-by-side photos of herself with the caption: “Me and my bald ass head, it’s cool doe I put the fur rite on top ... NO GLUE THO I’M ALLERGIC.” On the right of the post, she’s seen rocking a flawless unit, edges laid and all, while on the right, her bald head is on display in all its glory.

As usual for the wig connoisseur, the lace from the frontal is completely undetectable and the hair looks as if it’s growing out of her scalp. It’s mind-blowing for sure. Especially when you consider she pulled it off without using glue — a feat which has left people, including myself, mystified by how she’s managed to keep the unit in place.”If there’s no glue, what’s securing it? Tape?” one person wrote jokingly.

Equally as stunning as the frontal, though, is the image of her completely bald head, which has become the central focus of the viral post turning what should have been a celebratory moment into a fiery debate about black women’s hair and how they style it. After putting up the pictures, a handful of people start asking why she decided to go bald — a fair but personal question — but soon enough, the conversation devolved with some folks calling out Porsha and other black women for the hair practices they participate in like getting relaxers or sew-ins or wearing wigs made from bone-straight hair.

“Just stop all that fucking around with your hairs [sic]. Why you got bald in the first place . . . black women are so stubborn why can’t u just leave the hair God gave you,” one critic said. To which Porscha clapped back saying, “Bald by choice lol smh. No matter the situation, stop being negative, this is a gift that God gave me . . . quit trippin' over it.” Some naysayers seemed to believe that the only reason why someone like Porscha would choose to wear their hair is due to their internalized anti-blackness and embrace of European beauty standards that historically praises long, flowy hair as the epitome of beauty.

News flash: it’s 2018 and black women are allowed to wear their hair however they want. And beauty norms are changing anyway. Are there black women out there that straighten their hair or rock extensions in order to fit in with the dominant culture and avoid controversy? Ssure, but in my experience, they are the minority. Plus, when done correctly and cared for properly, weaves and wigs are actually versatile protective styles that give your natural hair a break for weeks at a time, as long as you look after your hair underneath.

We allow other races of women the space to experiment and have fun with different hairstyles, so why don’t we treat black women the same? Yes, black hair is loaded with a history of political strife tied to our texture, and there’s still a stigma in many spaces surrounding natural hair, but that doesn’t mean a black woman wearing straight hair or frontal of the same texture has to be self-loathing. Those hair choices don’t automatically make someone a sellout. Like everyone else, black women should have the freedom to live however they want — so let them.
