ClassPass Has Cancelled Its Unlimited Membership Tier

Unlimited ClassPass workouts are no more. The company announced today that they are discontinuing their Unlimited membership plan, which allowed subscribers to take as many exercise classes as they pleased at participating fitness studios for $180 per month.

The elimination of the plan comes after ClassPass raised the cost of membership for several cities in April. Current Unlimited subscribers will be allowed to stay on the plan for one more billing cycle before automatically being migrated to ClassPass's Core plan, which allows users to attend up to 10 classes for $135 per month.

In a blog post about the change, ClassPass CEO Payal Kadakia said that the Unlimited membership tier was never a sustainable offering.

"For every class taken, we paid our studio partners," she wrote. "The more classes that were taken, the more we paid. As you can imagine, our business costs increased rapidly. So we raised our plan prices in an effort to compensate – but we tried not to raise them too much. After all, we wanted to remain as accessible as possible. But in some cities, we even had to raise our prices twice in one year, which was awful for our members and painful for my team. We simply couldn’t make the plan work for our business."

Last week, ClassPass announced the addition of "add-on packs," which would allow subscribers to purchase additional classes if they've already used their monthly allotment. Nonetheless, many ClassPass Unlimited subscribers are not happy about the change, and they've taken to Twitter in full force to express their disappointment at the loss of Unlimited:

Kadakia apologized in her post if this news has let any members down, but also emphasized that she's hopeful for the future of the service.

She said, "You should know that despite this news, I am confident in where ClassPass is headed, as its founder and a user myself. In the coming months, we have our sights set on new features and test rollouts that include on demand video, “out of studio” experiences like group runs and social features that will enhance your membership. These new areas create more possibilities for all of you to lead inspired lives, no matter where you are or what you’re looking for."
