Gabrielle Union Speaks Out Against Sexual Assault and White Privilege

Gabrielle Union is done being silent about sexual assault and white privilege. In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Gabrielle Union speaks out about using her voice to call attention to “the history of sexual assault being used as a weapon of mass destruction against black female bodies.”

In Birth of a Nation, Union, who is herself a survivor of sexual assault, plays a slave who is raped—a role she took specifically as a platform for speaking out about sexual assault. But her mission faced a setback when the film fell under a major cloud of controversy when allegations that writer, director and star of the film, Nate Parker, had been accused of rape while a college student at Penn State in 1999.

Union isn’t giving up the fight and continues to speak out against sexual assault, but her role has also opened up another important dialogue—one about white privilege in Hollywood. Back in September, Union said in an interview that she’d like to have some real conversations with the likes of Amy Schumer, Kate Upton and Lena Dunham about the kinds of systemic oppression she sees in the black entertainment industry.

“In order to begin to see change start to occur, we have to be willing to have conversations with people who have different opinions than us,” Union said. “I’ve already talked to Lena Dunham; I would love to talk to Kate Upton and Amy Schumer. Maybe I can help to explain the oppressive systems that have benefited and allowed them to say these careless, insensitive and offensive things. Those conversations are awkward as fuck and they get heated.”

We have a feeling those tough conversations will happen soon. We'll be waiting.
