Lady Gaga Opens Up About the Downsides of Being Famous

Lady Gaga isn't one to shy away from getting real with her fans, and during an emotional interview on CBS's Sunday Morning, she opened up about the drawbacks of being famous, talked about her breakup with Taylor Kinney, and discussed the new direction she's heading with her new album, Joanne.

The interview definitely tackled some difficult topics, but Gaga remained an open book when it came to the tough stuff. As far as fame goes, she says, it's hard for her to be free anywhere but her house: "I'm very acutely aware that once I cross that property line, I'm not free anymore. As soon as I go out into the world, I belong, in a way, to everyone else. It's legal to follow me. It’s legal to stalk me at the beach. And I can't call the police or ask them to leave. And I took a long, hard look at that property line, and I said, 'Well, if I can't be free out there, I can be free in here.'"

Another downside? Missing simple human interactions. "I miss people. I miss, you know, going anywhere and meeting a random person and saying, 'Hi,' and having a conversation about life," Gaga said. "I love people."

She also got really real about love: "I think women love very hard. We love men. We just love with everything we have. And sometimes I don't know that that love is met with the type of dignity that we wish it would be met with. You know, we're not trying to make you less of a man. We just want you to love us as deeply and as wholesomely and as fully as we love you."

And yes, discussion of Joanne—and the different sound the album carries from her other work—also took place. For her, the album is a way for her to get back to Stefani Germanotta, versus the ultra-art-house Lady Gaga beloved by her little monsters. But it's also a natural progression in how she's developing as an artist.

"I think it is hard for them at times to, you know, change from album to album, 'cause I go through quite a transformation," she said. "And that's just the way I am as an artist. You know, they have to kind of let go of the last era of music."
