Reminder: An engagement ring is just one of the many bonuses that come with the real prize—getting to marry the person you love. We have newlywed Ariel McRae to thank for sharing her engagement ring story that happens to drive this point home.
McRae had been dating her then-fiancé for two years when they decided they couldn't wait to be married any longer, and so they headed out to buy a couple of rings before they eloped. "Money was tight," said McRae in a now viral Facebook post, but they managed to pick out two rings within their budget.

She wrote, "I wasn't even thinking about rings, I just wanted to marry my best friend, but he wouldn't have it. He scraped up just enough money to buy me two matching rings from Pandora. Sterling silver and CZ to be exact. That's what sits on my ring finger, and I am so in love with them."
While they were buying the rings, however, one of the store's employees came over to them and said, "Y'all can you believe that some men get these as engagement rings? How pathetic."
"When she said that I watched my now husband's face fall," said McRae. "He already felt bad because he couldn't afford the pear-shaped set that so obviously had my heart and covered my Pinterest page. He already felt like a failure, asking me again and again, 'Are you sure you'll be happy with these? Are you sure this is OK?' He was so upset at the idea of not making me happy enough, and of me not wanting to marry him because my rings didn't cost enough money or weren't flashy enough."
But as infuriating as that woman's comment was, McRae resisted the urge to tell her off, instead opting for the classiest reply we've ever heard: "It isn't the ring that matters, it is the love that goes into buying one that is."
It seems that the Internet agrees: McRae's Facebook post has now been shared more than 62,000 times. She also posted a photo of her gorgeous—and meaningful—rings, on Instagram with the sweet caption, "They aren't big and they aren't expensive, but they are the most precious and the most beautiful things in the world to me 💘"
As for us, we're grateful to McRae for our daily dose of perspective.
"Y'all I would have gotten married to this man if it had been a 25¢ gum ball machine ring," she wrote. "When did our nation fall so far to think the only way a man can truly love a woman is if he buys her $3,000+ jewelry and makes a public decree of his affection with said flashy ring? Sure they are nice, sure the sentiment is wonderful, and I'm not trying to cut down any of your experiences, but when did it come to all that? Why do material possessions equate love?"
Answer: They don't.
