Star Wars fashion. Three words you wouldn't think have much in common right? Wrong. Since its epic debut in 1977, the fashion industry has had a deep seeded love affair with George Lucas’s cult classic film Star Wars. From Luke Skywalker’s famous jedi robes to Darth Vader’s shiny black mask and C-3PO’s minimalist gold aesthetic, fashion designers have frequently looked to the film’s futuristic flair for style inspiration.
In anticipation of the series' newest iteration, The Rogue One, we’re taking a look back at the most intergalactic runway looks that have been inspired by the blockbuster franchise. And trust us, this isn’t your average movie merch.

While movie themed fashion collections is nothing new (take the Disney x Lazy Oaf collab or Moschino’s spring 2016 Disney princess collection, for example), the fandom for Star Wars fashion is on a whole other level. In 2011, Nicolas Ghesquière incorporated sci-fi elements into his collection for Balenciaga by sending Darth Vader inspired head gear down the runway. At Maya Hansen's fall 2013 show, models rocked Princess Leia's iconic (albeit extremely heavy) cinnamon bun hairstyle.
In 2015, Mara Hoffman's fall collection centered around the desert planet Tatooine—filled with beige, sand, and earth-toned hues. And just last year Bobby Abley decked his male models out in Chewbacca, Stormtrooper, and Darth Vader threads, with silver metallic mouthpieces and slicked back hair to complement the futuristic theme. Even Riccardo Tisci is a huge fan—the Givenchy Spring '16 runway show paid homage to Princess Leia and featured badass gold embellished head pieces.
Yes, it appears like the fashion world's fascination with extraterrestrial life isn’t slowing down anytime soon, and to be quite frank, it's pretty awesome.
