Oily skin and sunscreen aren't the most dynamic duo at times. Essential sun protection aside, sunscreen can bring out the worst in oily skin if you pick the wrong formula. Mid-day greasiness is already inevitable. The last thing those with oily skin want is something to accelerate the shine like an equally greasy sunscreen. Luckily, mattifying sunscreens exist, and they aren't always marketed as such.
A Redditor, who goes by the username Wsh1, has been spreading the gospel about the best matte drugstore sunscreen for oily skin on the beauty side of Reddit, and others thoroughly agree with the pick. The beloved sunscreen is none other than the Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Lotion, which goes for $12.99 at Ulta.
On the SkincareAddiction subreddit, Wsh1 shared that they first heard of the drugstore SPF from YouTuber HotandFlashy. "Since I've gotten more serious about using sunscreen [every day] after meeting you people, I've ordered it from Amazon," they wrote. "I am in love!"
They went on to explain that the Australian Gold sunscreen keeps their skin matte, doesn't make them break out, and doesn't feel oily at all. "In fact, it can be used as a face primer," they added. "A sunscreen that keeps me matte instead of adding to the grease?! Sign me up for this miracle!" Honestly, same. My skin has a tendency to turn anything I put on it into a layer of slick shine within an hour. Other Redditors also agreed that it's an excellent makeup primer.
Wsh1 also noted that the Australian Gold Botanical SPF 50 Tinted Face Lotion requires some double-cleansing to remove, because the SPF doesn't budge when washed off with a water-based cleanser. So be sure to suds up with an oil-based cleanser first, as you would with removing makeup.
Speaking of which, Wsh1 also mentioned on the MakeupAddiction subreddit that it's one of the best sunscreens to wear under makeup because it doesn't pill or make her skin look greasy. Both are essential factors in shopping for a sunscreen if you wear foundation regularly.
And Wsh1 isn't the only one who loves the Australian Gold sunscreen. Several of their fellow Redditors weighed in with their own reviews of the stuff. A user who goes by 3kids2cats wrote, "Best sunscreen hands down. I'm woman of a certain age and bought it because of Hot and Flashy's raves. It gives me a little blurring that lets me go without foundation." You had me at blurring, 3kids2cats.
Someone called breeezeee agreed on that front, too. "I don't wear makeup and this helps even out my complexion a tiny bit. Stays on like a champ, too. Love love love it," they said.
One downside to note is the sunscreen isn't exactly flattering on all skin tones. Because it's tinted beige and only has one shade option, whyiskalegross (LOL) noted that, "this product is not dark skin friendly." They bought it hoping the shade would blend out, but it left a white cast like they were "wearing the wrong shade of foundation."
The sunscreen doesn't come in an untinted shade, unfortunately. I suggest trying out Glossier's Invisible Shield or Bolden's similarly clear variety instead. Both might not be drugstore products, but they definitely don't leave that dreaded greasy finish.
