The Kira Kira app has been getting quite a lot of use during Spring 2018 fashion month. From New York City to Paris (with London and Milan sandwiched in between), we've seen more sparkle backstage than at an amateur ice skating competition. There was glitter on the eyes at Tom Ford and Anna Sui in New York, Topshop and Shrimps in London, and Alberta Ferretti and Stella Jean in Milan. At Gucci, there was glitter on the lashes and lips, while at Jeremy Scott, we saw teensy tiny crystals placed under the lower lashes and loose silver glitter covering the models' fingers. And I'm not mad at any of it. In fact, I'm thrilled. The fact glitter is one of Spring 2018's biggest beauty trends makes me smiler (and my Instagram Stories look pretty sweet), and today, at Dries Van Noten, makeup artist Peter Philips and hairstylist Sam McKnight just took sparkle to a whole other level.
In lieu of traditional glitter, Philips used clear Swarovski crystals as his sparkle of choice, gluing them all around the eyes or on the lips in either a horizontal or vertical line. "There's an excessive amount of costume jewelry in the show," said Philips of what inspired his decision to break out the crystal appliqués over loose or pressed shimmer. He kept the rest of the makeup supremely simple, just a bit of Dior's forthcoming Forever Undercover foundation that Philips debuted backstage at Dior the day before, resulting in a look he describe as "a bit surreal but with a touch of Vegas campiness." This may just be the chicest Vegas-inspired look I've ever seen — and one of my friends is a showgirl there.
McKnight, who created low, mussed up ponytails using his Cool Girl Texturizing Spray, also got in on the glitter action, gluing strips of the Swarovski stones across the severe side parts. "We kept the sparkle to only a few girls so it felt like an accessory," he said. "I liked the idea of mixing raw simple hair with sparkles."

And I like the idea of incorporating a few crystals into your makeup for a part or special occasion. When they're clear, like at Dries or Jeremy Scott, and placed strategically, the effect is more otherworldly than EDM festival.
You also don't need a hook-up with Swarovski to recreate the look. There are plenty of options to achieve the effect, whether that's using Make Up For Ever's Strass and sticking them on with lash glue, or going with stick-on face gems that you can find at either Ulta or Etsy). Either way, the message is clearer than ever this season: Shimmer isn't just for raves and Vegas showgirls anymore. Glitter is always a good idea, so go sparkly, or go the heck home.
