Matt Lauer Has Been Fired From NBC News After Allegations of “Inappropriate Sexual Behavior”

There seems to be a flood of sexual assault and harassment allegations being made by survivors recently, notably since the Harvey Weinstein story first broke back in October. People are coming forward to talk about their experiences with sexual assault and harassment both in Hollywood and in plenty of other spaces, as well, and it's been both a triggering and cathartic couple of months for survivors hearing story after story. Now, another story has hit the news cycle, this time involving Matt Lauer.

The TODAY Show tweeted about the alleged incident on Wednesday morning. In the tweet, they said, "Matt Lauer has been terminated from NBC News. On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment." The tweet also includes a video from Wednesday morning's broadcast, which shows Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb breaking the news on the air.

NBC News reported on the story and said it was revealed in a company-wide memo from NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack that the complaint prompted a serious review, after which it was decided that the alleged behavior was a "clear violation of our company's standards." Though it was the first complaint they'd received against Lauer, Lack said "there was reason to believe" it may not have been the only incident.

Lack also said, "Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender." The memo can be read in full on The Hollywood Reporter. Lauer has been with the show since 1997, and his current contract extended through 2018.
