This Makeup Artist Turned Her Vitiligo Into the Perfect Halloween Doll Makeup

After weeks of seeing Pennywise after Pennywise makeup looks on my Instagram feed, seeing a creepy doll come up recently was a much-welcomed change of pace and a relief. (I never had a fear of clowns before the new It came out.) Upon closer look, I noticed this take on the classic Halloween makeup had a sweet story behind it.

Earlier this year, Chicago-based makeup artist Lauren Elyse gained attention for her colorful looks that feature her vitiligo spots instead of conceal them. Her latest Halloween makeup is no different. Instead of painting on patches for a rag doll look inspired by Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, she worked with what her skin naturally has. "Because Sally is basically a living rag doll, who’s all stitched up, I figured my vitiligo could work as 'patchwork' and make my face look like it was stitched together with different pieces of skin," Lauren Elyse tells Allure.

To do so, Lauren Elyse started off by painting a silicone modeling product called 3rd Degree across her cheeks and around the spots on her eyes "to create the illusion of cut-up pieces of skin being sewn together," she explains. Next, she applied her makeup as she normally would. The only difference is she blended in a lighter colored foundation — Revlon's Colorstay Foundation — on the bottom portion of her face. Once she was done, Lauren Elyse cut up pieces of thread and glued them on around the lines she created with the 3rd Degree using hair bonding glue. "I immediately knew I wanted to use real thread," she says. "I wanted to play with texture and give a slightly more realistic feel instead of drawing them on." I fully support that decision because Lauren Elyse truly does look like her skin is being held together with stitches. I'm living for it.

The whole creepy look took about two and a half hours. "I don’t usually time myself, but doing special effects and adding the thread took quite some time and focus," Lauren Elyse adds. All that time was so worth it, though. The final look is incredible. It's like a spooky version of her everyday look. BTW that gorgeous blood-red lipstick is M.A.C.'s Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Carnivorous. Creepy doll makeup aside, Lauren Elyse convinced me I need to try that lipstick out this fall.
