"Shadow Roots" Is the New Hair-Color Trend to Watch

There are so many different hair trends, it's hard to keep them straight. There are all the food-related hair trends, like Salmon Sushi Hair and Hot Toddy Hair. There are the more magical hair trends, like Unicorn Hair and Mermaid Hair. Then, of course, there are just general colorful trends, like rainbow bangs and highlighter highlights. All of these trends are great options to amp up your look, and now, we have one more trend to add to the list for you — Shadow Roots.

Shadow Roots was recently discovered by Refinery29 and is a pretty sneaky (and artful) way of adding color into your look. The thing is, roots are a natural part of the growing out process — they're going to happen, and this trend embraces them by making them part of the look. With shadow roots, either your natural color is allowed to shine through from the beginning as part of the dye job (a la Selena Gomez), or roots of a different color are created with dye. Just take a look at some examples below.

As you can see, there are plenty of paths to getting the Shadow Roots look. Folks with both long and short hair look great with it, and it can be super subtle (see: the woman with blue roots) or extra bold (check out the woman with the striking purple). The most important part is deciding what you want (though I'm sure both Pinterest and Instagram can help out in that department) and finding a stylist who is good with color.
