The 2018 Golden Globes has seen a lot of epic moments, from the countless celebrities who wore black on the red carpet in protest of sexual harassment to the acceptance speech given by Oprah Winfrey that the adjective "inspirational" cannot even begin to cover. However, Natalie Portman delivered a different kind of wild moment while presenting the award for Best Director.
Standing beside her co-presenter, director Ron Howard, Portman let out a subtly sharp, swift blow to the Golden Globes. "Here are the all-male nominees," she said matter-of-factly before the feed cut to each director — and indeed, the directors nominated were entirely male — looking a tad taken aback. The Shape of Water director Guillermo Del Toro won the award, and during his acceptance speech chose not to address Portman's words. It's worth noting that he looked a little frustrated when he asked for a moment to thank "a few fantastic women" as music began to play, indicating it was time for him to exit the stage.
As The Wrap points out, there has only been one female winner in the category in Golden Globes history — yes, really, just one — which occurred in 1984 when Barbra Streisand was named Best Director for Yenti. In other words, if Streisand's award was a person, they would be in their early 30s right now.
On the bright side, you can now treasure Portman's a-plus burn in GIF form forever. On the dark side, there's still a serious lack of gender diversity in Hollywood.
Twitter was quick to react to Portman and, for some, to voice their feeling that Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig was snubbed for the award. The film was not without accolades during the show, however: Lady Bird captured the Best Picture award and the Best Actress award for star Saoirse Ronan's performance.
