Ultra violet ombré hair is happening and we’re kind of obsessed. On Tuesday, Ahead Hair Media, a global hair trends site in Asia, reposted a video of the color process done by hairstylist Natsuhiro Yamamoto, who created the look back in June at the Hair and Make Earth Kagurazaka salon in Japan.
“I think about ideas by seeing various posts from Instagram,” Yamamoto told Allure, in translation from Japanese to English. On his website, the hairstylist reveals that he receives 10 new appointments every month solely from Instagram — another testament to the power of social media.
In the video, the client originally has medium brown hair with a touch of blonde ombré. Yamamoto begins by separating her hair into sections and paints on a purple dye. The goal is to get a subtle ombré: a rich, dark violet at the top and just a bit lighter at the tips. It's not too intense, but it's oh so pretty.
Yamamoto then combs through the hair for even distribution. After the coloring has set, he finishes the look by curling the ends. The overall process took an hour and a half.
Ultra Violet is Pantone’s Color of the Year and we've already been seeing it in several beauty products, from eye shadows to lipsticks. The color is slightly darker than the pagenta (a blend of magenta and purple, that is) shade, but still, this look’s not for the timid.
According to Pantone, enigmatic purples have long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance. Even before the recent wave of attention, a number of celebs have given ultra violet hair a shot — take Katy Perry, for example.
Given its popularity, who knows, maybe ultra violet may be the new black!
