100 Years of Lipstick and Lip Trends in History (Video)

Though it's hard to imagine a world before super-matte lipsticks and Instagram lip art, lip products have run the gamut in terms of style, color, and finish over the decades. Even the classic red lip has had its fair share of change: the look rose to popularity as a quintessential part of the 1920s flapper style (women used crimson hues to accentuate their cupid bows) and peaked again in the 1940s, though wartime rationing forced people to get creative with household items like beets. Today, there's no limit to the look, as evidenced by the work of makeup pros like Pat McGrath (hello, red glitter lips).

Though scarlet shades have stood the test of time, so too have unconventional colors, albeit for different reasons. Long before sunny shades like NYX Citron hit shelves, women used yellow lipstick to make their pouts pop in black and white film, while ladies in the '80s paved the way for bold unconventional colors (much like today's Kat Von D) to amp up the disco style that was popular at the time.

One thing's for certain, though: as long as humans have lips, we'll always use them as canvases for experimentation.
