Watch Lupita Nyong'o Try Our "Beauty Rorschach" (Video)

Every time we have the chance to sit down with a star for the video portion of their cover shoot, our goal is to find a fun, fresh, and original way to get to know the celebrity — really know them, as best as we can. So, when we had the honor of catching up with the force of nature that is the Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, who is Allure's March cover star, we knew we had to come up with something as witty and insightful as she is.

This time around, our team took a gamble and went with an angle we’ve never tried before: a Rorschach test. If you’re unfamiliar with the fabled psychological assessment, it involves the subject making assumptions based on looking at a series of ink blots and is supposed to reveal major truths about someone’s psyche. Needless to say, pretty intriguing stuff. We even put our own Allure touch on it, using lipstick, eyeliner, and more makeup remnants from our desks, which we “artfully” demolished to use in place of actual ink. Luckily, Nyong’o was game for it.

After an hour or so of playing, even Lupita was mind-blown — as were we — by how eerily on-point the test proved to be. “It’s actually scary how accurate a bunch of splotches can be,” she said, adding, “Who designed this thing?” (That would be Hermann Rorschach, for anyone curious.)

We won’t give anything else away — it's simply too good to divulge — but we will say, the whole experience only made us love our girl Lupita even more. And we didn’t know that was possible. Watch and you’ll see, too. Who knows: You might actually have more in common with the wunderkind than you thought.
