Halsey Gives Powerful Speech About Endometriosis at Blossom Ball

Like many people with a uterus, Halsey has endometriosis, a condition in which the uterine lining grows outside of the uterus and can lead to painful periods, inflammation, chronic pelvic pain, and more. Though to get diagnosed with endometriosis, you may have to convince a doctor that your symptoms aren't just a result of bad cramps, and a lot of people don't get properly diagnosed because doctors think their pain is normal. On Monday, March 19, Halsey gave a powerful speech about dealing with this experience, encouraging fans to demand better healthcare.

"A lot of people are taught to believe the pain is normal," she said at the Endometriosis Foundation of America's Ninth Annual Blossom Ball, where she received the Blossom Award, according to Vogue. "If you think something is wrong, it probably is. You need to go and demand that someone takes you seriously. Your health is all you have, and especially as a young woman who has reproductive pain, you need to take care of yourself."

Halsey opened up about how she applies this mentality to her own life. "I have male managers in my life. I'm surrounded by men all the time," she told Us Weekly at the event. "There were times when I was bleeding through my clothes or I was sick and it got to the point where I had to look at everyone around me and be like, 'You know what? That is something that is a reality for me and you need to suck it up and deal.'

"I'm not going to let you make me ashamed of this," Halsey added. "We're going to get through this."

The singer also said that she finds a lot of support from others experiencing endometriosis. "You really admire them for how strong they are and all that they have achieved," she said during her speech. Halsey herself served as a source of inspiration for many younger fans, when she tweeted about her experience with endometriosis in 2016. "Just know I'm here if you want to vent," she wrote then. "I have managed to live a wild, incredible, and unpredictable life with Endo, and I'm here for you!" Two years later, Halsey's tweet has made a huge impact. "I have the privilege of getting to meet a lot of young fans on the road," she said in her speech, according to US Weekly. "And many of them have told me that without that tweet they wouldn't have taken the opportunity to talk to their doctors and physicians and say, 'Hey, something's not right.'"
