Last April, we gave you a heads-up that super-long, Cher-inspired hair was about to become a major beauty trend. And yet, a year later, despite biotin supplements, strengthening hair masks, and trying to make it grow with your mind, your hair is somehow not brushing your butt. Weird. Just kidding — it can be a legit struggle to grow long hair, especially if your goal is better measured in feet than inches. It's no wonder so many celebrities turn to wigs and extensions to get the look.
Take Jennifer Lopez, for example. Prior to her big Met Gala haircut, she's been wearing her hair nearly waist-length for most of 2018. Then suddenly, at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, she showed up with even longer hair. Needless to say, no amount of wishful thinking can make hair grow two feet overnight. It was, of course, extensions — 50-inchers, as a matter of fact.
So that's the good news: Celebrities aren't harboring some magical secret to instant hair growth that you, a commoner, are forbidden from accessing. The bad news is that the super-long hair so many stars have been seen wearing lately doesn't come cheaply. According to L’OrĂ©al Paris stylist Kellon Deryck, faking serious length can cost as much as your rent — or several months of it. "The cost of a hair unit ranges from $700 to $2,500, depending on the quality and color,” Deryck told Page Six. The hair unit he's referring to is a full lace wig, which is often made from real human hair imported from other countries.
Think extensions are any less expensive? Not if you want a seamless look. Deryck tells Page Six that using four or five individual "bundles" of extensions are an option for achieving super-long hair, and that costs $240 — per bundle. And don't even think of trying to attach them yourself. You'll want to turn to a pro for installation, which “can range between $200 and $3,500, depending on the experience of the stylist," Deryck explains. It can also depend on the technique — sewing or bonding — and time it takes, which can run anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours. Less expensive clip-ins do exist, but the longer you go, the more they'll cost.
Ultimately, if you're on a budget, you can get extra-long extensions on Amazon for a mere $9, but inexpensive beauty products are often a crapshoot. Meaning, be prepared to risk your hair looking a little less Cher-inspired and more like an incomplete drugstore Cher costume.
