Christian Siriano on Dressing Melania Trump: "I Think I Need to See How It Goes"

The political-fashion news tip isn't slowing down, you guys: The latest to speak out is Christian Siriano on dressing Melania Trump.

Although it's been just over a month since Donald Trump was officially President-elect of the United States, lots of controversial opinions have bubbled over in the political world—and similarly, the fashion industry has been hit with an internal controversy of its own. Several designers have come forth to share their opinions on dressing Melania Trump. Industry giants like Sophie Theallet and Tom Ford have right out refused the job, while veterans Carolina Herrera and Tommy Hilfiger have taken the opposite stance, showing their support for the future First Lady. Now Christian Siriano, one of Michelle Obama’s recent go-to designers, has expressed his views.

Unlike any of his peers in the industry, Siriano straddled the fence when asked whether or not he will dress the incoming FLOTUS. “I think my response is, I’ll let you know,” he said in an exclusive interview with “Access Hollywood”. “I think I need to see how it goes, I really do. That’s my diplomatic answer.”

The New York-based designer, who has shown support for Hillary Clinton in the past, added that there are many factors—personal and profession—that go into making such a decision. “Sadly, it’s really just one of those things that has nothing to do with her, it’s just obviously what she’s representing in what’s happening right now,” he said. “It would be hard for anyone, especially for someone like myself, a young gay fashion designer. I can’t support a campaign where I might not have the same rights. I just got married. There’s lots of deep things that get into it.”

But the Project Runway alum did not hold back when expressing his admiration for Michelle Obama, who has worn his designs twice so far. At the Democratic National Convention in July, the First Lady not only made headlines for her resounding speech—where she shared her most memorable line to date: “When they go low, we go high”—but also for her royal blue dress custom-made by Siriano, as seen below.

“What’s great about Michelle is that she’s such an amazing woman and she’ll be doing great things forever,” he also said. “So even in 20, 30, 50 years, I would love to dress her. Even if no one covers it, even if there are no photos, it’s an honor to make clothes for her."

He also shared his gratitude for the First Lady’s unwavering support for emerging American designers. “She celebrates fashion and celebrates young American designers, too, which is also exciting for me, because that’s what I am.”

The designer has been garnering press for his role as an advocate for body inclusivity. He recently received praise from critics and fans alike when he enlisted plus-sized models of diverse background to walk in his spring 2017 runway show. Unlike some designers who have found difficulty dressing for women beyond size 0, Siriano said the work hasn’t been a challenge at all. "I don't know if it's ever been an issue for us," he told Allure earlier this year. "I've never even thought about it. I grew up with a mom who was a size 14 my whole life. And some of my best customers are over a size 10. I'm a huge fan of tons of women that are every size. I'm not going to say no to dressing Oprah!"

While Siriano hasn’t found a new muse in Trump yet, one thing is for certain, we can’t wait to hear more the designer.
