What happens when you combine black-out contacts, special-effects makeup, and fake blood? Enough scary Halloween makeup looks to make me never want to go on Instagram again — at least during the month of October. Seriously, makeup artists are going all out this year.
Each look that pops up on my feed lately is more frightening than the next. Eyes are being squished out sockets, optical illusions are boggling my brain, and way too many insects and arachnids are involved — all of which are giving me nightmares.
Knowing some people live for this stuff, I sacrificed my scaredy-cat soul to find some of the creepiest Halloween makeup looks on Instagram. And let's be real: They make the bloody squiggle brows look tame.
Sphynx Face
Let's start off with a look that doesn't involve any blood. Instead, this creepy cat is more of a psychological thriller. I'm not sure what's scarier: the total look or figuring out where the makeup artist's eyes, nose, and mouth are located.
Masked Man
As we move up the scare meter, we have this Friday The 13th-inspired Jason mask makeup. It's a firm reminder of why I avoid scary movies at all costs.
Eight Eyes
OK, onto some eye stuff. (Sorry, but this will be the first of many that involve eyeballs.) Makeup artist Heather Moorhouse covered her face with an unsettling amount of them.
Decaying Zombie
Part of me is seriously impressed with Jordan Hanz's special effects makeup skills. A bigger part of me is slightly terrified by this maggot-studded zombie.
Rorschach Demon
The black contacts make this "Rorschach demon" that much more frightening.
Creepiest Girl in the World
Nope. Nope. Nope. I'm not entirely sure what is happening here, but I do know that I'm not OK with it.
Poke an Eye Out (Or Two)
My eyes hurt just looking at this bloody look.
Holey Maggots
This is making my skin crawl on a level that I never wanted to reach.
Saddest Snow White
My childhood has been burnt to a crisp just looking at this. I'll never look at the Disney character the same after seeing this.
Arachnophobia
If you didn't already have a fear of spiders, let this makeup remind you that those things exist in most horrifying yet beautiful way.
LOL
Here's another optical illusion-style makeup that will make you question everything. I feel terrible about this.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled
Excuse me while I cringe into infinity.
Puck It Up
Makeup artist Katie Kelly typically creates gorgeous bold looks, but this one just makes my head hurt.
