At last night's Golden Globe Awards there was a minefield of unforgettable makeup moments. That's not up for debate. Though if you ask us, the metallic smoky eye trend reigned supreme. Debra Messing, Viola Davis, and Allison Williams were just a few of what felt like myriad actresses who turned up to the show with glistening lids, so seeing as it's the perfect look for any glamorous winter occasion (this includes a solo selfie session in your bedroom, obviously) we figured we'd show you how it's done. With the help of makeup artist Rommy Najor, we broke it down in 10 simple steps, so go grab your blending brush, snag your favorite sparkly shadow, and watch how to get a red carpet-ready metallic eye beat at home.
Start by sketching roughly all over the eyelid and lower lash line with a creamy black pencil liner of your choice (Najor used Make Up For Ever's Black Kohl); then blend in circular motions with a clean tapered fluffy brush to smoke it out. Next up, take a medium-toned brown shadow and blend it into the crease as your "transition" shade, as this will diffuse some of the black smokiness and set the pencil liner in place.
Then it's on to the fun stuff: With a flat brush, take your metallic shadow (Najor opted for a plummy bronze by ColourPop) and pack it onto the center of the eye, blending it out to disperse the color across the lid.
Following so far? Cool. Once you have your layer of shimmery shadow down, take a black matte shadow like M.A.C.'s Carbon and blend it in a "C" shape from the outer corners towards the bottom lid for added smokiness. After blending out any harsh lines, take a rose-gold shadow (or whatever light metallic shade you fancy) and tap it into the inner corners of the eyes for a brightening, ultra-glam effect. Finally, for added drama, run the black liner you first used along the lash line again, curl those lashes, and generously apply two coats of volumizing mascara for a false lash look. Najor used L'Oréal's cult-classic Voluminous, for anyone wondering. And voilà! That's all there is to it.
