My mother always told me you woo flies with honey and not vinegar, but when it comes to my hair, well, things are a little different. Apple cider vinegar in particular has been popping up in so many hair products, and given its benefits, it's no wonder beauty brands are adding this miracle liquid to the mix. "Apple cider vinegar contains amino acids and pectin that contribute to help strengthen and hydrate your hair," cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson tells Allure. "The acids (malic and acetic) help cuticles to contract, increasing its shine and smoothness." ACV is also packed with antimicrobial properties, which "can reduce the levels of yeast on the scalp, which promote inflammation that subsequently leads to itching, flaking, and bumps," says New York–based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner.
